Deploying Windows XP SP2 using Active Directory Group Policies To deploy Windows XP Service Pack 2 using Microsoft Windows Active Directory and a Group Policy follow the steps outlined below.
Download the Network Administrator version of Widows XP Service Pack 2 from The IT Professional Download Page
Next extract the Widows XP Service Pack 2 files by running WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /x The /X switch tells it to expand only.
You
will be prompted for the location to expand the XP Service Pack 2 files. Ensure that the location you choose has Everyone with Read permissions on the folder and all files and subfolders below that. Read access on the share if this is applicable.

Open Active Directory Users and Computers Right click the Organizational Unit that contains the systems you want to deploy the patch to. Choose Properties Click the Group Policy Tab Click New to create a new policy. If you have the Group Policy Management Console installed Click Open to open this then create a new Group Policy. Give your policy a descriptive name and hit enter to create the policy. Then highlight the policy and choose edit. In the Computer Configuration section, drill down into the Software Settings to the Software Installation section. Right Click on Software Installation and choose New Package Use the browse button to drill down to where you extracted SP2 The path you want is \\server\share\extractedfiles\i386\update\update.msi
Once you've found the UPDATE.MSI file in the UPDATE folder double click the file. Leave the setting as an "Assigned" Application, click OK.
You should now see your application summary. Close this box to save your Group Policy Object. |

If service
pack 2 does not deploy on clients in the OU you selected, check the application
log in the event viewer on the client computer.
