How To Reinstall TCP/IP on Windows XP due to Spyware Adware Removal

If you have attempted to remove Spyware and Adware using Adaware or Spybot you may find yourself in a situation where TCP/IP no longer works.  Sometimes you can ping or respond to ping but nothing else.  Running IPCONFIG may produce errors or nothing at all.  This is how you restore TCP/IP on Windows XP. 

 

Step 1 Delete TCP/IP Registry Keys

First open the registry editor using REGEDIT.  *WARNING you can damage your PC by incorrectly editing the registry *

Find and delete the following keys.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Reboot the PC

Windows will recreate these keys when you reboot.

Next Reinstall TCP/IP on Windows XP

Right click your network connection

Choose Properties

Click Install

Click Protocol and click Add

Click Have Disk

Type c:\windows\inf and click OK

Choose TCP/IP from the list of protocols

Click OK and restart the PC.
