Many high end air beds will provide a switch to adjust how firm or soft your air bed feels.  The Sleep Number Bed from Select Comfort gives you an actual number Select Comfort calls the Sleep Number.  The Sleep Number lets you set your air bed where you like it no matter if the air bed is changed or not.  Other air beds allow you to adjust how firm or soft your air bed is but may not provide an indicator of the setting you chose.  This can make resetting your air bed difficult should the setting change.  Still other air beds are more basic and allow for no easy air adjustment.  You may even attach a vacuum to the air bed to fill it and then let out air as needed.

When I worked for Select Comfort my customers always mentioned how comfortable they were on simple camping mattresses.  Why should a higher end air bed be any differen't.  Today's high end air beds simply refine the concept that the camping air mattress provided.  Today's air beds are durable carrying long decade long warranties.  The air beds today allow you to make precise adjustments and allow for many choices in padding or fabrics.
