I worked in the sales department at Select Comfort in the mid 90's and watched as the sales model went from direct sales to a retail model. For a long time most Select Comfort beds were sold over the phone with a 90 night trial. We were common telemarketers with only a lead to follow based on a video tape request of potential Select Comfort customers. When the Select Comfort retail stores opened they were a drain on the profit of the business but as one can see now they drive the business. In between was what we called "Select Comfort Road Shows" We would send a mailing to potential Select Comfort customers in an area, then drive van to a hotel in the town and set up a showroom over a weekend. We would sell Select Comfort beds and a band of roaming "Sleep Experts" was formed. These teams of Select Comfort sales reps toured the country in a van holding road shows over the weekend showing off the Sleep Number Bed. Now with Select Comfort retail stores open everywhere this probably isn't done anymore.

Select Comfort has come along way over the years. When I worked for Select Comfort in the mid 90's there was no Sleep Number Bed. Select Comfort only had a few models "Select Comfort Classic" or "Select Comfort Pillowtop" and you could choose to have your Select Comfort bed in polyester or rayon. Today the Select Comfort bed has turned into a Sleep Number bed which is a nice way to set the Sleep Number Bed apart from competitors.

Select Comfort stores do not actually stock Sleep Number Bed. When you order a Sleep Number Bed from the store or from Select Comfort direct your bed is shipped to your home. Sleep Number Beds can be put together by most anyone. When you receive your Sleep Number Bed you begin your trial period. Select Comfort is so confident in their Sleep Number Beds they offer a 30 day trial.
Sleep Number Bed Controls
In the old days the controls on Select Comfort beds had no indicator of where your Select Comfort was set. This used to irritate customers as they had no way to set the Select Comfort bed back the way they liked it if someone changed the setting on the Sleep Number Bed. Today's Sleep Number Bed has delivered on what customers have long asked for. A simple sleep number so people know where their Select Comfort should be set. Because it takes the body weeks to adjust to a new setting it is critical that Select Comfort customers know where their Sleep Number Bed is set. Today's Sleep Number bed delivers completely.
When I started at Select Comfort I was given the opportunity to purchase a Select Comfort bed for $125.00. This was a great opportunity for all Select Comfort employees as it gave us an opportunity to tell customers we were personally using the Sleep Number Bed. I don't know what Select Comfort employees get now but I doubt they get the deal we were offered. Sleeping on the Select Comfort mattress was key in my success as a sales rep at Select Comfort.
